We welcome newcomers and experienced cavers alike. We are a very active sport caving club – we are out caving every Wednesday evening and at least every fortnight at weekends. We also occasionally organise trips to other parts of Britain and abroad. We do the full range of Yorkshire Dales caving and potholing, check out the meets list for currently planned trips but it normally includes wet, dry, vertical and horizontal from Birkwith and Old Ing to Lancaster Hole/Easegill, Gaping.Gill and Alum Pot. We have some very experienced members who can find their way to the most obscure parts of some of the longest cave systems in the country. If you are interested please use the Contact form to get in touch.

About to go down Skirwith

Caving, or potholing if you prefer, is a fantastic sport with aspects to interest and challenge everyone - or at least everyone who doesn’t mind getting a bit wet and muddy from time to time. From easy walks and scrambles along mainly horizontal stream passages to abseils down into vast chambers, there is opportunity to see parts of the planet seen by very few others and even the chance to find and explore completely new cave passages. It can be as easy or as hard as you like and there are plenty of technical aspects to caving as well, from equipment and rigging to geology and digging, it is a sport where there is always more to learn, both physically and mentally.

It is perfectly natural to be a bit apprehensive about dark places, confined spaces or heights and the best way to overcome this is to join an active club and go underground with experienced cavers. Most trips with Kendal Caving Club either start in a café or end in a pub so there is a good opportunity for a chat and socialising as well. The Annual Dinner is always well attended and is another good opportunity to meet a wide variety of cavers and their other halves.

Beginners trips may include caves like Upper and Lower Long Churn, Great Douk, Valley Entrance and as skills and confidence develop move on to more vertical caves such as Sunset Hole, Dolly Tubs, Swinsto and Lancaster Hole/Easegill.

Kendal Caving Club has members, male and female, of all ages from early twenties to beyond retirement and we are very welcoming and friendly. We have equipment that you can borrow while you are getting started and we are happy to organise suitable trips for new comers.

We like to keep the bureaucracy to a minimum and just get on with the caving. There is a minimal process for joining the club, normally people come along to a few meets, have a go at a variety of caves, meet some of the members and join if they feel it is the club for them.

So please use the Contact form to get in touch, we look forward to hearing from you.
